Biography
Sechaba Nyenye (b. 1982, Ficksburg, South Africa) is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Lesotho. Raised in Maputsoe, Lesotho, Nyenye’s artistic vision and deep-seated connection to community were shaped early on by the grandmother who raised him. After spending a pivotal chapter of his career developing his practice and exhibiting in Cape Town, South Africa, he recently returned home to Lesotho to care for his grandmother—a transition that further deepens the themes of heritage, care, and lineage that anchor his work.
Nyenye’s artistic journey originally began with music, playing in a band and working on an album. Following the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, he conceived a creative plan to craft unique, beaded masks to revamp the band’s image. Though the masks were ultimately rejected by the group, Nyenye continued to create them independently, eventually integrating them into his paintings and discovering a profound new visual language. In mid-2022, he met acclaimed artist Simphiwe Ndzube, assisting in the fabrication of the sculptural elements for Masemola Road.
Today, Nyenye’s practice explores the vital intersection of art, culture, spiritual health, and sustainability. Inspired by the resilience of his community, the beauty of repurposed materials, and the power of creative transformation, his work actively challenges societal norms around consumerism and waste. By combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary themes, he ignites conversations about the transformative power of art to reclaim, redefine, and reimagine, ultimately inspiring viewers to reconsider their relationship with both the environment and one another.
